Dental Crowns & Bridges

What is a crown?
A crown is a cap that is placed over the remaining tooth restoring its natural shape and appearance and held in place with dental adhesive or cement. A crown could be used for several reasons, such as:

As a protective cover for badly broken down teeth or teeth with cracks.
For teeth with large fillings or in teeth which have been root filled to prevent further deterioration. Our crowns are carefully crafted to look natural and blend in with the rest of your teeth.
To improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth or to close minor spaces.
To act as an anchor for a bridge or denture.

What is crown made of?
Crowns are usually made from ceramic or metal alloys or a combination of both. We prepare the tooth at the first appointment and take impressions. The crown is made by highly skilled technicians, who craft the crown to feel and look like a natural tooth. We then fit this at a second visit.

What are bridges made of?
They are usually made from precious metal, with or without porcelain bonded to the base. Sometimes they are made solely from ceramic.

Are bridges costly?
At a treatment planning appointment you will be given an estimate for your individual bridge. It may seem expensive, but if looked after properly it will give you many years service. It will help you to chew more efficiently and will improve your appearance. Considerable skill from both the dentist and the dental technician is required to make your bridge. It will be a custom made piece of mouth jewellery.

Will it be difficult to look after?
To prevent problems such as decay and gum disease you will need to clean your bridge daily. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to look after your bridge with special floss and brushes. This way you should be able to enjoy your bridge for many years.
